e-mail virus targeting EDU sites
It has been reported by multiple academic institutions that an e-mail virus is being distributed with various subject headers relating to a campus rape. Within the e-mail is an attachment claiming to be photos or movies of the attack.
The subject may be a variation of the following:
CCTV Still of Rapist
Campus Student Raped
The attached file (trojan) may be titled:
suspicious_photos.exe
CCTV-footage.exe
The executable appears to be a type of IRC-controlled backdoor trojan (Win32/OutsBot). At the present time, it appears that only a few anti-virus products are detecting this virus. It is advised to keep current with anti-virus signatures/definitions on both clients and servers (particularly e-mail).
It should also be pointed out that no such incident has occurred at the University of Nebraska. This e-mail is relying on social-engineering to trick the user into executing the trojan.
Please email the CSN Helpdesk or telephone 2-7373 if you have any questions or concerns regarding this virus.
